Discover the fascinating fluorescent rocks that have captured the imagination of collectors worldwide
A Recent Discovery
Yooperlites were first discovered in 2017 by Erik Rintamaki on the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. These rocks contain sodalite, a fluorescent mineral that glows a vibrant orange under ultraviolet light.
During the day, Yooperlites look like ordinary gray rocks. But when illuminated with a UV light at night, they reveal their hidden beauty with a stunning orange and yellow fluorescent glow.
The name "Yooperlite" comes from "Yooper" (a nickname for residents of Michigan's Upper Peninsula) and "lite" for their light-emitting properties.
Did You Know?
While Yooperlites were only recently named, the sodalite mineral they contain has been known to science since 1811.
